In this collaborative project between Leipzig University and Ritsumeikan University, we aim to rethink the “Japaneseness” of Japan’s videogames by examining them within the context of the various local and global networks and ecologies they are part of. The project will involve three workshops, as well as a series of collaborative or co-supervised research projects. Each of these projects will develop an innovative approach to Japan’s videogames capable of drawing out local specificities and at the same time situating them within their various regional and global contexts of game production, creation, contents, aesthetics, technologies, consumption, discourse, politics, and research. With this project, we aim to understand the complex structures Japan’s videogames are entangled with better, and to come up with new theoretical and methodological approaches to study them.
