Martin Potthast, who is head of the Department of Text Mining and Retrieval at the Institute of Computer Science at Leipzig University, will explain the technologies behind ChatGPT in his talk „Language, Language Models, and ChatGPT“ for non-computer-scientists. Here is a short abstract:

The talk will provide a basic background on how language models work, how they came to be, and how they have evolved to the present day. Lastly, it looks at how ChatGPT was built and discusses the capabilities and limitations of the tool.
